The direct answer

Most small-boat failures are not storms. They are a missed buoy, a turn started too late in current, or a depth sounder alarm nobody set. The water does not care that you meant to stay in the channel.

Red, right, returning is the whole lateral system in one phrase — when you are coming in from seaward, keep red marks to starboard. Reverse it on the way out. Charts, AIS, and a lookout still beat a plotter you are staring at instead of the water.

The seamanship stack — what actually keeps you off the rocks

Look out the window. Then confirm on the chart. Then use the engine.

Buoyage
Red right returning from seaward. Local IALA region still wins over memory.
Draft
Set the depth alarm above your actual draft plus squat. A beep is cheaper than a grounding.
Current
A river bend with head current is a different turn than slack water. Plan the swing.
Lookout
One person whose job is the water, not the plotter.
Heavy weather
Slow down, reduce sail or throttle, and keep the bow from being a hammer.
