How to find your way when GPS is a blank screen

The direct answer

GPS is a convenience, not a plan. Batteries die, canyons eat signal, and a phone that is also your light, radio, and map will be empty by night two. Navigation without electronics is a small set of skills: know where you are relative to a linear feature (ridge, river, road), walk a bearing, and catch yourself before the error compounds.

Day: a shadow-stick gives an east–west line in 15–20 minutes — mark the tip, wait, mark again, the first mark is west. Watch method and analog clock tricks are backup, not precision. Night (northern hemisphere): find Polaris via the Big Dipper’s pointer stars. Southern hemisphere: Southern Cross, extend the long axis 4.5 times, drop to the horizon.

A map and compass still beat folklore. Orient the map to the terrain, then walk. Catching features (a road, a creek) are how you recover when the bearing drifts. Direction without a compass — two methods that actually work

These are coarse. Use them to pick a corridor, not a house-sized target.

Shadow stick (day)
1 m stick, mark shadow tip, wait 15–20 min, mark again. First mark ≈ west, second ≈ east.
Polaris (north)
Big Dipper pointer stars (outer bowl) → Polaris. That is within ~1° of true north.
Southern Cross (south)
Extend the long axis ~4.5× toward the horizon. That point is south.
Terrain association
Match ridges, saddles, and water to the map. Recover on a catching feature, not by guessing.
