Frequently Asked Questions

How do I use the app offline?

The Last Manual is designed to work fully offline out of the box. Once you download and install the app, all survival guides, tools, scenarios, and the complete library are stored on your device. You do not need to do anything special — just close your Wi-Fi and cellular data and the app continues to work exactly the same way. There is no "offline mode" to enable. It is always offline.

How do I export a guide as a PDF?

Open any article or guide in the Library or Scenarios section. Tap the share icon (top right corner) and select "Export as PDF." The PDF will be generated on your device and saved to your Downloads folder (Android) or Files app (iOS). You can then print it, email it, or share it via any app on your device. PDF export does not require an internet connection.

How do I use the Emergency Access feature?

From the Home screen, tap the large red "I NEED HELP NOW" button. You will be presented with a brief triage wizard — answer a few simple questions about your situation (e.g., injury, disaster type, environment) and the app will surface the five most critical action steps for your specific situation, ranked by priority. This is designed to be usable under extreme stress, with one hand, in poor lighting.

How do I use the Compass?

Go to the Tools module and tap "Compass." The compass uses your device's built-in magnetic sensor. Hold your phone flat and away from metal objects, speakers, and other electronics for the most accurate reading. The compass works without GPS or internet — it only uses your device's hardware magnetometer. On first use, you may be prompted to calibrate it by moving your phone in a figure-8 pattern.

How do I send an SOS signal with the flashlight?

Go to the Tools module and tap "SOS Flashlight." Tap the large "Start SOS" button. The app will automatically flash your device's rear flashlight in the international Morse code SOS pattern (... --- ...). The signal repeats continuously until you tap "Stop." Keep your phone's screen on and the app in the foreground during signaling.

How do I create a custom checklist?

Go to the Tools module and tap "Checklists." You will see pre-built checklists (Go-Bag, Bug-Out Vehicle, Shelter Setup, etc.). To create a custom checklist, tap the "+" button in the top right corner. Give your checklist a name, then add items by typing them and tapping "Add." Your custom checklists are saved locally on your device.

How do I download offline maps?

Go to the Tools module and tap "Offline Maps." You will see a map of your current region. Tap "Download" to save the current map area for offline use. You can zoom in or out to choose the area and detail level — larger areas at higher detail require more storage. Map downloads do require an internet connection, so download your region before you need it. Once downloaded, maps work fully offline.

The app says my compass needs calibration. What do I do?

Hold your phone in front of you and move it in a slow figure-8 pattern (like the infinity symbol) for about 10 seconds. This recalibrates your device's magnetometer. If the compass is still inaccurate, ensure you are away from large metal objects, speakers, laptop computers, and other magnetic interference sources.

Will the app work if my phone has no battery?

No — the app requires your device to be powered on. We strongly recommend keeping a portable battery bank (power bank) in your emergency kit to extend your phone's battery life during an outage. The PDF Export feature exists precisely for this reason: export critical guides as PDFs and print them so you have a physical backup that doesn't require power.

How do I delete my data or account?

There is no account to delete — The Last Manual does not require registration or create any account. All data (bookmarks, custom checklists, notes) exists only on your device. To delete it, either go to your device Settings > Apps > The Last Manual > Clear Data, or simply uninstall the app. See our Data Deletion page for full details.

Does the app collect any data about me?

No. The Last Manual collects zero personal data. There are no analytics, no crash reporting, no usage tracking, and no data transmission of any kind. Your survival information is private. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

How often is the content updated?

Content updates are released periodically via app store updates. Because all content is bundled with the app, you receive content updates by updating the app through the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. There is no separate content download required. If you never update the app, the content you installed with will remain available forever.

⚠ In a real emergency

If you are in an active emergency and professional emergency services are available, call them first. The Last Manual is an educational tool, not a replacement for professional emergency response. In the US, call 911. In the EU, call 112. In the UK, call 999.
